Much of Trump's campaign has focused on a "return" to "law and order." The candidate has often painted a picture of an America ridden with crime, and painted himself as the man who can erase those crimes.
During the second presidential debate on Sunday, Trump said the United States was in the middle of the biggest rise in murders the nation has seen in 45 years. That's not untrue, but Trump provides no context, leaving out that the murder rate is still nowhere near what it was in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Even so, Trump's "Make America Safe Again" speeches seemed to have worked. Multiple unions have come out in support of the Republican candidate.
The Fraternal Order of Police, a nationwide police union with 330,000 members, endorsed Trump just last month.
"He made commitments to us that he would support law enforcement if he was elected, and keep our views in mind as he undertook to uphold the threshold responsibility of a president, which is to protect public safety," FOP Executive Director James Pasco said after the endorsement was announced.
Trump has also won the endorsement of the Cleveland Police Patrolmen's Association and the New England Police Benevolent Association.
But that support is far from uniform.
In a July open letter published by representatives of 30,000 police chiefs, sheriffs and attorneys throughout the country, the representatives responded to Trump's call for "zero tolerance" law enforcement by saying "we know from our experience as law enforcement officials that over-relying on incarceration does not deter crime."
