Like any skill, mastering the guitar takes practice. It’s easy to tell someone to take lessons to get better at something, but it’s not always easy to find those lessons, especially in person. The good news is, for all you aspiring guitarists, you can learn how to play guitar online. We’ve put together a list of a few places on the internet where you can learn the the acoustic guitar and electric guitar so you, too, can play “Wonderwall” at parties to a crowd that would rather you just...not. Bonus: Some of the guitar lessons are free!
Justinguitar.com is a site where you can learn the guitar from guitarist Justin Sandercoe. AS a guitar teacher, Sandercoe offers a wide range of online guitar lessons at multiple difficulty levels for free (with suggested donations). Take a video progressive course, learn individual songs, and check out lessons on specific genres like blues and jazz. Just pick a spot on the course mapand get started learning guitar.
Yousician gives its users over 1,500 lessons and songs to try – a bigger collection for a bigger price. The site offers yearly, quarterly, and monthly plans for as low as $14.99 per month. You can learn individual songs, or strap in for the long haul by starting with beginner lessons and working your way up from there. You don’t have to commit to paying guitar right away, though. There’s a week-long free trialto allow you to get a feel for the service and decide if learning guitar with Yousician is right for you.
Those wanting to know how to shred on electric guitar can hop on MasterClass and learn from Grammy-winner (and Rage Against the Machine-er) Tom Morello for $15 per month. The online course contains video lessons that cover everything from guitar technique to solos. You may even learn how to write your own song on the guitar.
We’re moving back into free territory with Your Guitar Academy (YGA), a site with a collection of ready and available video lessons for beginners and more experienced players. Learn acoustic guitar or electric guitar. Take a look at “player studies” to learn more about the style of iconic guitarists like Slashand John Mayer.Even get a few lessons on music theory, which you could say is a little important when trying to learn a musical instrument.
It’s almost too easy. How many great guitar players are strumming away on YouTube? A lot. And you can learn from them. Learn from observation or find channels specifically dedicated to teaching lessons. You can look around to find the teacher/musical style/experience level that works for you — you can also find free guitar lessons — but here are a few channels and videos that can get you started.

Finding an online guitar course isn't hard. But it may take some trial and error to see which guitar instructor is for you. Try a few of the free classes first and then decide whether you want to level up and pay for online guitar training.
